Businesses coming and going from Cedar Falls Main Street

Posted: Updated:

Several new business opening on Main Street recently, but also a few closing their doors and leaving store fronts empty.

For rent signs, empty windows, stores including Sassy Chic and Snap Fitness closing up shop.

But Cedar Falls Community Main Street is working to fill the the space quickly.

"There has traditionally been a waiting list to get into the district based on the square footage and size. So, just waiting for the right size space to come open. Right now, our waiting list is a little less than what it has been in the past," said Executive Director of Cedar Falls Community Main Street Carol Lilly.

With many of the shops closing at 5 p.m. and the restaurants staying open for the dinner hour, many people said they would like to be able to shop later into the evening.

"Well it would have been nice right now, but the time got away from us. . . When it is nice, like this, out to come out and enjoy the evening," said Jo Novinger, who frequents Main Street.

"So we are trying to encourage stores and provide that training and provide the data to show them that it is worth while being open later," said Lilly.

But despite a few suggestions by customers, most everyone is happy with the progress the Cedar Falls Main Street is making, including one man who hasn't been back in 15 years.
"Everything has changed. The broom factory is gone.  . . They have really cleaned it up. It looks really nice. The story fronts are really beautiful," said Skip Beckham, a Waterloo West High graduate now living in Orlando.

A sentiment echoed by locals and others from out of town on Main Street Friday night.

Executive Director of Cedar Falls Community Main Street says they already have one store front filled and interest in the other open spaces.
