An Iowa man is now sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of having sex with a minor. 27-year old Orlando Ramirez Ruiz, of Waterloo, found guilty of third degree sexual abuse and enticing a minor.

Court documents state he picked up the 13-year-old girl from school and took her to a motel.

Authorities say Orlando Ramirez Ruiz is a sexual predator.

In September  of 2014, authorities say Ramirez was able to take a 13-year-old girl from her school and he later sexually abused her.

According to the criminal complaint, Ramirez was able to enter the girl's school at George Washington Carver Academy, where he "withdrew the victim out with use of a false reason."

He then took her to a local motel where the abuse happened.

Ramirez originally pleaded not guilty, denying any sexual contact with the girl. He was later found guilty for sexual abuse in the third degree and child enticement.

Now we're digging for answers as to how this 13-year-old girl was even able to leave the school building.

KWWL asked Waterloo Community School Administration what the policy is for students leaving the school day.

"So to access a building one would have to present an i.d. and be apart of a database that is interconnected across the district, and with the authorities," said Waterloo Director of Schools and Community Relations Tara Thomas. "So that we can prevent an unauthorized person from entering our building without gaining access through checking in and clearing the system."

KWWL asked if the school knows exactly how this man was able to come pick the girl up.

"I can't comment on this specific case, to protect the child's privacy," said Thomas. "But I can assure you that we are always working to maintain our current and strict policies and procedures are effectively carried out because the students safety is our top priority."

Ramirez will have to register as a sex offender as well.

The school administration did also say their policy for students leaving school has not changed since this incident.
