Monticello reacts to rare armed robbery

Posted: Updated:

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a bank in Monticello.

It happened late this morning at the F&M Bank on E First Street.

The bank is surrounded by other businesses on the main street in town.

Most people told KWWL they didn't even know the bank was robbed until they saw police arrive.

"I saw the news truck and the police car sitting out here and I was wondering what was going on," says Hailey Wilson, of Monticello.

"There were rumors going around, turns out it was a robbery," Lydia Lange of Monticello told us.

"I was just at the bank maybe thirty minutes before it happened," Lange says.

14-year-old Lange was working at the store right next door at the time of the robbery.

"Kind of still a little shaken up because it was just next door and we didn't know it happened so it could've happened to us next," she told us.

Police say a black man, in all black clothing including a black mask went into the bank with a pistol and demanded money.

The robber left with cash although police aren't saying how much.

"Nothing like that has ever really happened since I've been here," Wilson says.

Police agree, it's unusual to have an armed bank robbery in Monticello.

Witnesses told police they saw the suspect get into a black minivan.

The robber is still at large, but police and the FBI are continuing to investigate.

If you have any information contact the Monticello Police Department.
