New Sandy Hook school to open this fall

(NBC) -

A new sandy Hook Elementary school will open this fall.

The school was built to replace the building where 20 first graders and six staff members were shot to death in December of 2012.

The old building was torn down in 2013 and the new million dollar, 86,000 square foot school was built on the same land, but not the same footprint.

There is no formal memorial to the shootings on the school grounds.

The new building was built using significant community input as town leaders worked to honor the lives of those killed while building a safe and environmentally friendly school.

Security was a concern in the design and without being too obvious, there are safety measures everywhere.

Each classroom can easily be secured, the windows are bullet resistant, the interior walls have been reinforced and the entire building is monitored by video.

Nearly 400 students will begin the school year in the new building on August 29, 2016.

Seventy of the students, who are now fourth graders, were in kindergarten when the shootings took place.
