Chicken competition returns after canceled by bird flu last year

BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Black Hawk County Fair is in full swing this week.

Today, kids in 4-H (a leadership youth program) are participating in several animal competitions, including chickens.

Last year the chicken contest was canceled because of the bird flu that swept through Iowa.

Competitors say, without testing the chickens it was hard to tell if their bird had the flu.

"It went statewide all over Iowa and it made all the birds sick," said Matt Zuck, animal owner from Dunkerton. "If you brought all the birds in, then it would make all the other birds sick from the flu. You never knew if your bird had the flu or not."

This year, it's back on.

Owners, like Matt Zuck, were excited to have their prized chicks judged.

"They are looking for their feathers to be perfectly white, their feet all clean and big nice birds." said Zuck.

Rabbits and other farm animals will be judged tomorrow.
