Family pet killed

A Cedar Rapids family searches for answers after they say someone purposely killed their family pet.

Pet owner, Ashley Ray of Cedar Rapids, is upset after someone killed her puppy.

She says it's the malicious behavior that's so heartbreaking.

After 10-month-old Bella, a Shih-Poo mix, went missing Monday, Ray and her family started searching the neighborhood, and they also reached out to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

On Tuesday, the puppy's remains were found in a river, inside a bag, and with her legs tied together.

Ray says neighbors and family members are in shock.

"They're terrified, and they're scared too, because they can't believe what I'm telling them, and that it happened right where we live," Ray said.

Once someone found Bella's body, they took her remains to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, and workers called Ray.

Ashley says she broke down after learning how Bella died.

"They found her in the river, in a bag, with her legs tied together so she couldn't swim away. Even if she wanted to, she couldn't fight for her own life," Ray said.

Signs are still posted in the are where Bella went missing.

Ashley says after learning what happened to Bella, she's concerned for her family.

"It scares me for my child and my family's children, and the children who are all around me. Because if they're capable of doing this to a small helpless animal, what are they going to do to a small child," Ray said.

Ashley says it's been hard to hear her 3-year-old daughter ask for Bella the past few days.

She says she isn't certain who did this, but she did file a report with authorities, and they're investigating all the evidence -- including who owned the bag.

At last check, the Linn County Sheriff's Office is investigating the situation and no charges have been filed at this time.
