Combine demolition derby a big hit at Bremer County Fair

Posted: Updated:

This is no normal demolition derby.  This is a combine demolition derby.

Old and otherwise useless combines take the ring at the Bremer County Fair Wednesday night.

This event has been around for more than a decade, and is usually the fair's top draw.

"I think it's just the fact we're one of the only ones around that does it, and it's kind of unique, and we always draw a big crowd, and we have a lot of good competitors," said Derrek Sommerfelt, the event coordinator.

Justin Dilger has been running this event in his current combine for nine years, winning the event the last two years.

He's aggressive right out of the gates, and makes his way out of the first heat and into the championship round.

"It's a little nervous at first, but you get going, and you get back into the groove of things, and it's fun," Dilger said.

Dilger would go on to win his third title in a row.

And as combine after combine continue to crunch each other, they continue to impress those of all ages.

"It's fun, it's great because a lot of the combines are here, it's a really great competition, and I can't choose who would be the winner," 7-year-old Zach Aryboevers said.

The Bremer County Fair runs through Saturday.
