IOWA CITY -- An appeals court is upholding the murder conviction of a volunteer firefighter in the fatal shooting of his sleeping, pregnant wife.
The Iowa Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday the evidence was sufficient to find Seth Techel guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Techel is serving life behind bars in the May 2012 killing of Lisa Techel in their trailer in Agency in southeastern Iowa. She was four months pregnant with the couple's first child.
Prosecutors said Seth Techel used a friend's shotgun to kill the 23-year-old so that he could start a relationship with a co-worker. They say he made hysterical 911 calls claiming an unknown intruder killed her while he was in the shower.
Techel has maintained his innocence and pointed to other possible suspects, including a mentally ill neighbor.
