Herbicide accidentally sprayed on Marion neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

On Tuesday evening at approximately 7:00 PM calls came in to Marion 9-1-1 about a white substance on cars and houses in a northeast Marion neighborhood. The Linn County Hazardous Material Team was called to investigate, and found the substance to be a broadleaf herbicide that may have come from a crop dusting aircraft (aerial sprayer). The area affected surrounds the Marion Swimming Pool, roughly the area bordered by 31st Street, McGowan Boulevard, 41st Street, and Willowridge Road and Willowood Avenue.

The substance was identified to be a broadleaf herbicide used in farm fields, and the application concentration of the substance poses little risk to the public. Hard surfaces can be washed with soapy water and vegetation can be rinsed with water to further dilute and remove the substance. It is recommended that homeowners follow the same precautions as when normal lawn care products are used, keeping children and pets away from the affected areas.

If anyone finds a white powder or white sticky substance on their vehicle, residence or yard please call the Marion Fire Department at 319-377-8237 to report your location.
