UIHC combating room shortage

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics is experiencing a shortage in patient rooms.

Hospital representatives say they've seen an increase in the number of patients overall and it can result in long waits for hospital rooms.

They say a plan is in place to combat the waits, starting with opening a new wing for short-stay patients.

"I think across the nation we're experiencing this problem of people having increase access to health care as well as an aging population that puts us in a place where we're trying to provide care for so many patients every single day," Emily Wynn, UIHC Interim Associate Chief Nursing Officer.

The wing will add an 13 more rooms and will open in September.

In addition the new Children's Hospital will open in December freeing up even more space.
