$1 billion Powerball prize drives Iowa Lottery record sales

Posted: Updated:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - It was a record year for the Iowa Lottery which posted the highest ever sales due to a buying frenzy just before the world record $1.6 billion jackpot was won in January by three players.

Lottery officials, in an annual report posted Tuesday for the fiscal year ending in June, say sales were nearly $367 million. The previous record was $339.5 million in 2006.

Increased sales were driven largely by a 43 percent increase in Powerball ticket sales which rose to $75 million from $52.2 million the year before.

Scratch tickets, by far are the most popular product, brought in $233.7 million up 10 percent from $212 the year before.

The lottery paid out nearly $222 million in prizes to players and $88 million to the state, both new records.
