Modern technology not an option in West Virginia town

Posted: Updated:

In the unincorporated town of Green Bank, West Virginia, you won't find a cell phone. You won't find WiFi or a radio station, either, for that matter.

The people living there aren't archaic by choice. Green Bank is home to the world's largest moveable radio telescope.

The massive piece of technology is trying to pick up faint signals from outer space; therefore, modern technologies might interfere.

The town is graced with landlines, and pay phones. Any microwave oven, however, has to be in protective steel boxes.

Visitors might wonder: does this impact business? As for when the Dollar General opened, the automatic doors had to be removed because they were interfering with the telescope.

In the end, the people of Green Bank are having face-to-face conversations, instead of text messaging, or emailing.
