Jackson Co. Sheriff investigating vandalism at La Motte park

JACKSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Jackson County Sheriff is investigating after reports of vandalism and theft at a park in La Motte over the weekend.

In a Facebook post, they say it happened either Saturday night or Sunday morning.

A gathering area left trashed, and a number of lewd messages written on the outside of a park building are among what was found early Sunday at the La Motte Area Recreation Park.

The act has a lot of people in La Motte very upset.

"It's just upsetting that it's a small community, and we try to keep it nice, keep it clean. And then you have vandals come in and kinda destroy all the hard work that people in the community put towards that," said Brian Swartz.

Swartz was one of many in the community who helped bring the park about and maintain it over the years.

The Jackson County Sheriff said in that Facebook post that they don't take these acts of vandalism lightly, and that they plan to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

And while Swartz is unsure if they are from the area or not, he, like many others, are upset with the lack of respect shown to such a popular and treasured spot.

"They need to appreciate what they have. I don't know that they're from the area, obviously we don't know who they are, but they need to have respect for people and work that people have done in this area to keep this as nice as it is, and have amenities like that, that we have in this town. Like you said, it's rare that such a small town has such nice stuff," he said.

If you have any information, you're asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Office immediately.
