Otavious Brown's Family Speaks with KWWL

Posted: Updated:

It has been one week since Waterloo's first homicide of the year and no arrests have been made yet.

21-year-old Otavious Brown was shot and killed last Sunday off of Logan Avenue. Brown died from a single gunshot wound to his chest. As his family mourns, they are also frustrated, demanding justice for their son.

Stepfather Raymond Birden says, "We won't get full closure until the person or persons who did this are apprehended. This was an act of violence that was senseless and could have been avoided."

Despite numerous reports of shots fired, Brown's death marks the first homicide of the year in Waterloo.

Stepmother Tenesha Birden says, "My son is gone....and for what? It's petty."

The family says it's time for the community to come together, so no other families have to feel the pain they feel right now. Raymond Birden says he forgives those responsible but he's asking they come forward.

He says, "Although you took my son, I am praying for you. I forgive you because I love you because Jesus loves you. One day you will have to meet the Lord and explain to him what took place."

Otavious will be buried in Mississippi, where many of his relatives live. A Gofundme page has been set up to help the family with this trip: https://www.gofundme.com/2fkhwq4

Meanwhile, the investigation continues. Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers are offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest.
