Hillary Clinton campaign: Russians leaked Democrats’ emails to help Trump

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON — Hacked emails are threatening to overshadow this week’s Democratic National Convention.

Some of the 19,000 emails published on the website Wikileaks suggest the Democratic National Committee played favorites during the primary season. Bernie Sanders says the leaks prove what he already knew: that the DNC planned from the start to support his rival Hillary Clinton. The Vermont senator told ABC’s “This Week” that’s disappointed, but “not shocked,” by the exchanges in the emails.

Sanders is calling for the head of the DNC, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to step down immediately. He says a new leader is needed to focus the DNC on defeating Donald Trump, attracting young voters and improving the economy.

Clinton’s campaign manager tried to shift blame away from DNC officials. Robby Mook said on CNN’s ‘State of the Union” that “Russian state actors” may have hacked into DNC computers “for the purpose of helping Donald Trump.” He says it’s no coincidence the emails are coming out on the eve of the party’s nominating convention in Philadelphia.

How the emails were stolen hasn’t been confirmed.
