New sport coming to Cedar Valley

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A new sport coming to the Cedar Valley.

Dek Hockey, a form of floor hockey played in a small arena with no skates required.

This version originating in Canada where it is very popular. This will be only the 3rd rink in the state.

The rink is located in the River Loop of Downtown Waterloo and has the sounds of cheering and teamwork echoing through the city.

"I am from here. I grew up here. I have really enjoyed seeing the Downtown Waterloo expand and was happy to bring something else here that is going to improve our downtown area," said Waterloo Dek Hockey Co-Owner Joe Giachino.

Taking up space a that is mostly unused, city council approved a 5 year lease with Waterloo Dek Hockey; part of the downtown development push.

And if the kids who have started playing already have anything to say about, the sport won't be going anywhere.

"It has been a blast! Every game. Every shift," said player Landon Sturch, 12.

Many people say there isn't enough for kids to do in the Cedar Valley. The Waterloo Dek Hockey owners' hope is to give kids and adults one more thing to keep kids off the street and having fun.

"That is an other reason we went Downtown Waterloo. We want this to be an opportunity for everybody. For everybody to come down here and have some structure with this; have a consistent thing to do," said Giachino.

With free open rink times and youth equipment rental, the sport is more accessible than ice hockey which can get very expensive very fast.

League play for youth and adults will be starting in August.
