Getting ready for RAGBRAI

(KWWL) -

It's that time of the year again. Iowa's 44th annual RAGBRAI kicks off this weekend.

RAGBRAI or the Registers Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa is an Iowa tradition.

Thousands of cyclists ride from one side of the state to the other. The ride starts on Sunday and goes until next Saturday.

As some people are putting in the miles on their bikes, it's also a busy time for bike shops.

It goes without saying, RAGBRAI is one of Iowas favorite traditions.

Time, after time. Thousands of cyclists ride rain or shine. Biking across the state. Setting up camp, and exploring new towns.

"For some cyclists they focus their whole year around this week," said Cedar Falls Bike Tech owner Brent Johnson.

There are a lot of ways riders get ready for RAGBRAI whether that's riding trails or taking a second look at their bike. Which is exactly what the guys at Bike Tech in Cedar Falls have been busy with the past couple of weeks

"We  like to say a bike is a lot like a car," said Johnson. "You know it needs a periodic adjustment or tune up."

They've been checking over bikes, looking for any safety issues for riders.

"Checking bolts for tightness, making sure tires will have enough life in them to get through the ride worry free," said Johnson.

But no worries, even for those who may have decided to skip the pre-ride check. Johnson said he'll be there on the road to service any problems.

"We see a lot of flat tires, in the early days this week we'll see a lot of broken spokes due to the amount of hills and bumpy roads," said Johnson.  "Try to make your RAGBRAI as enjoyable as possible."

Johnson says although a lot of people have been coming in earlier, they've seen a decrease in the amount of riders just because of the different route this year.
