UPDATE: University Avenue project on time

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: University Avenue is starting to take shape with all the road construction in Cedar Falls.

Workers are staring to build a few of the roundabouts along University Avenue.

At first, it seemed to be a contentious issue for drivers, but people seem to be looking forward to the idea.

The process is loud, messy, and confusing, while construction workers are beating the heat in these humid conditions.

Workers are doing everything in their power to transform the avenue that used to be a pothole mess to an updated route ... designed to safely and quickly get you where you need to be.

"My husband used to say, 'try to avoid the bumps. It's hard on the tires and underneath the car and things like that," Cedar Falls driver Melinda Greiner said.

"I really try to avoid it the best I can, and we try to sneak sneak up from the back. It's progress. It just takes time and patience. When it's all done, it really will be nice," Melinda said.

Even though construction might seem like it's going slow on University, project organizers say it's right on time.

That's good news for drivers.

"Once the street is finished, I think people are going to enjoy it, but they need to stay on their tippy toes and be careful while they're driving.  Some roundabouts may be very dangerous, you know," Brandon Williams of Waterloo said.

Williams uses University Avenue every day to get to work in Cedar Falls.

"I am very excited. Let's be honest. I think everyone is very excited. It's just whether it's going to work or not, but I'm very excited," Williams said.

Williams says he's looking forward to the change.

"It will be a fast pace direction from that point to the point in all directions," Williams said.

Project organizers are between stages one and two on different parts of the University Avenue project.

Organizers say even though mainline paving should be done by the end of November, the expected finish date is the end of May depending on weather.

According to project organizers, the University Avenue project is currently on time.

Right now, parts of the project are on stages 1 and 2.

A roundabout is starting to take shape outside Famous Dave's.

In nearly 6 to 8 weeks, workers hope to have University Avenue fully in stage from Hillcrest Drive to Grove Street.

This will have all traffic on the north side of University and the construction will be on the south side.

Please stay tuned to this story as we share drivers' reaction to the project.
