Michael Phelps is Olympic team captain for first time

(NBC) - Michael Phelps has already achieved a new Olympic first, three weeks before the Rio Games.

Phelps was named a captain of the U.S. Olympic swim team for the first time, in his record-tying fifth Olympic appearance. The other captains are Nathan Adrian, Anthony Ervin, Cammile Adams, Elizabeth Beisel and Allison Schmitt. 

Phelps, 30, is entered in three individual events in Rio and could be part of three relays. Captains were chosen by the 47 swimmers on the U.S. Olympic team.

U.S. Olympic swim team captains at the previous three Games:

2012: Brendan Hansen, Jason Lezak, Peter Vanderkaay, Natalie Coughlin, Rebecca Soni
2008: Hansen, Lezak, Erik Vendt, Amanda Beard, Coughlin, Dara Torres
2004: Lenny Krayzelburg, Tom Malchow, Lindsay Benko, Jenny Thompson
