Staying cool in the heat

Posted: Updated:
(KWWL) -

It's a warm day and even warmer weather is expected in the coming days.

People are escaping the heat in a variety of ways, from replacing broken air conditioners to spending time at a splash pad.

"It's a great day to have off, nice to be outside," Natalie Murrell told us, a Cedar Rapids resident.

While being out in the heat, there are things to keep and eye on.

"People that have been sweating and then they stop sweating, then they start getting very dizzy, they'll start getting a little less conscious," says Zach Baum, Area Ambulance Service Paramedic.

Baum says it's good to spend time in air conditioning, and for Nate Redmond installing air conditioners is keeping him busy, he says maintenance starts with simply spraying a water hose around the unit.

"It just gets rid of any cottonwoods that may be in there, dirt, dust anything that's around," says Redmond, Colony Heating & Air Conditioning HVAC Installer.

If you are in need of air conditioning, there are many public places you can go to cool off.

"Loitering is encouraged at the Cedar Rapids Public Library especially on a hot day like this," Dara Schmidt told us, Cedar Rapids Library Director.

The moral of the story is it's hot, stay hydrated, cool off and by all means avoid being the next medical call.

"We'll start a couple of IV's on them, start to rehydrate them with IV fluids," Baum told us.

Across Linn County there are multiple heat relief locations you can go to, they are simply public places with air conditioning.
