Cedar Falls resident celebrates 100th Birthday in the sky

It isn't every day someone celebrates their 100th birthday.

One Cedar Falls resident is flying into her 100th birthday celebration.

KWWL's Jessica Hartman joined Jewel Kohler, a resident at Western Homes Communities, for the ride of a lifetime in a powered parachute.

After a century of traveling and countless life experiences, Jewel had only one wish when she blew out the birthday candles this year.

Fly over Iowa and no one was going to talk her out of it.

"If you ever want to land for whatever reason. . . " explained pilot Denny Mills.

"Why don't you think I am going to like it?" asked Jewel.

A few minutes later, strapped with a GoPro and hoisted into the passenger seat, Jewel was ready to fulfill a dream she has had since she was a little girl.

"She was always looking down. She loved looking down. She would move from one side to another looking right straight down. Not too many people do that. They like looking at the horizon. She noticed the dome right away. She pointed at the dome. She was anxious to get a little closer to the UNI-Dome," said Mills.

"Well, would you go up and do it again?"

"Oh anytime," said Jewel.

"Any plans for how you are going to celebrate 101?"

"No! . . . It would be very hard to top this one," said Jewel.

"She was really smiling. I turned around once then because she leaned all the way over and really smiled as I got down real close to the bean field and then went back up," said Mills.

Jewel was smiling and laughing the entire time.
