DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Iowa Congressman Rod Blum won't be at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Instead, he's focusing on his campaign here in the 1st District.

"We're going door-to-door, door knocking, finding out what the issues are that people care about," he said.

Blum says this is a better use of his time. -- shaking hands and handing out pamphlets in the flora park Dubuque community.

This time he's in a competitive race against challenger Monica Vernon.

Although other Iowa lawmakers will be in Cleveland such as Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley, Congressman Blum says he won't be missing out on much. "Absolutely not. I would much rather be here in Iowa, trust me," Blum added.

Even though he won't be in attendance, Blum still supports the presumptive nominee Donald Trump. They have some similarities, both coming from a business background.

As for the protests that seem to follow Trump everywhere -- Blum says, "I think a lot of the protesters are professional paid protesters. Well, in fact I know they are. That's not saying all of them are, but there's a great majority that are funded by liberal sources that are going to protest Donald Trump."

For the rest of the week, Congressman Blum plans on campaigning in other towns in the district. That includes Waterloo and Cedar Rapids.
