FORT DODGE (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids Prairie had opportunities, but couldn't cash in as the Prairie Hawks fell 5-0 to second ranked West Des Moines Valley in the opening round of the class 5A softball tournament.

Valley put Prairie in a hole early due to a pair of costly fielding errors. The Tigers Alex Hannold drove a base hit in to right that skipped past the fielder and to the wall allowing the first run to score on a two base error. Valley put three runs on the board in the opening frame.

"We just didn't come out and play, said Prairie head coach Joe Yegge about his team's slow start, "Valley, they've been here several times. They had the swagger."

Prairie would find an opportunity in the fourth with runners on second and third with no outs. However, Valley's MacKenzie Ward struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Tigers added two more in the fifth to put the game away and advance to Thursday's state semifinal.
