AMES, Iowa (AP) - The director of Iowa's renewable energy research center says he's resigning because outside criticism has made it difficult for him to lead.

Iowa Energy Center director Mark Petri says he's proud of what he has accomplished during his 3 ½ year tenure.

He says he implemented programs that have helped Iowa groups bring in major grants. He says he's also proud of a new curriculum that will help incorporate energy into K-12 education.

But Petri acknowledges that some critics, including utility interests, have questioned and resisted his changes. He says that "those external factors have just made it really difficult for me to implement the changes that we felt need to be made."

Petri says he's leaving to lead a new critical infrastructure resiliency institute at the University of Illinois.
