Director of Iowa renewable energy research center to resign

Posted: Updated:

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- The director of Iowa's renewable energy research center is resigning after 3 1/2 years on the job.

Iowa Energy Center director Mark Petri submitted his resignation last month and is stepping down effective July 29.

Iowa State University, which operates the center, has named professor Mufit Akinc as the center's interim leader.

The center's advisory council is planning to meet later Monday to discuss the search for Petri's replacement.

Iowa State vice president for research Sarah Nusser says Petri "has enhanced the Iowa Energy Center's impact and effectiveness."

Lawmakers created the center to research and promote alternate forms of energy and increase energy efficiency.

The Iowa Utilities Board last year threatened to withhold the center's funding until it provided more information on its spending.
