Police ramping up patrol after multiple attacks

Posted: Updated:

Waterloo Police are investigating a rash of attacks on the trails and in other areas of the city.

One woman, unable to walk after being attacked by several teens along the trail, Wednesday evening.

She told police, the teens were on bikes and came out of nowhere.

Just hours later another report of a man attacked along the Cedar River Trail.

But these teens aren't just targeting runners or people on the trails. The latest attack happened Thursday night on a city sidewalk.

A man walking near 8th and Wellington was attacked by several teens who rode away on bikes.

"Next thing you know, they were chasing him down. They assaulted him. He had again minor injuries that were similar to the other calls we have had recently," said Waterloo Police Captain David Mohlis.

With all of the victims describing the attacks and the group of teens in similar stories, Waterloo Police believe it is likely the attackers are from the same group, aging from early teens to early twenties.

"What we are receiving is information that they are either black females or black males," said Mohlis.

The five attacks have included anywhere from two to ten teens. In some cases wallets and phones were taken.

Waterloo Police ramping up patrol on the trails this weekend and bringing in extra officers to help combat the problem throughout the city.
