College cheerleader & camp counselor dies from meningitis

Posted: Updated:

A young college cheerleader known for her caring nature died from bacterial meningitis.  Now some parents at the gym where she was a day camp counselor for hundreds of kids are worried.

21-year-old Kristy Malter of Mount Pleasant, Michigan was a  junior at Central Michigan University. On Tuesday, she was hospitalized with bacterial meningitis and died two days later.

Malter was also a day camp counselor who worked with approximately 219 children ages five to twelve at the Life Time Fitness gym location in Rochester Hills.

Health officials and the facility are now scrambling to contact parents who had their kids in the camp at the time Malter was working, June 1 through 11.

Since the incubation period for the virus is one to ten days, the camp says parents should be on the alert until July 21. Some parents, however, were upset with what they perceived as a lack of communication from the gym.
