Sheriff: Woman hit brakes to avoid kitten, causes crash

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A five-car crash that snarled traffic for an hour on the Dubuque/Wisconsin Bridge reportedly happened after a woman slowed down to avoid hitting a kitten, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office.

They say 39-year-old Michelle Jones was heading north on the bridge when she saw a kitten and slowed down, concerned it would cause a crash. They say her car got caught in between gears, and slowed down. That caused a chain reaction of people slowing down behind her, authorities said.

According to a press release, Bradley Collins and Amy Letcher were driving behind her, and also slowed down.

But, according to authorities, Cole Brandt couldn't slow his truck down in time, hitting Clare Blum in front of him. Blum's vehicle would hit Collins' vehicle, causing damage to both.  Two vehicles would be towed from the scene.

Behind all of this, Monica Brester hit her brakes to avoid hitting the cars.  The vehicle behind her, driven by Paige Powers, would skid into and hit Brester's car, causing moderate damage to both vehicles. Both vehicles were driven from the scene.

No injuries were reported in the accident.

The crash remains under investigation, and possible citations are pending.
