Iowa woman giving hugs and handshakes to thank police

Posted: Updated:

In eastern Iowa, people are finding ways to thank law enforcement after the tragedy in Dallas.

Waterloo woman Diane Ebert has been traveling across Iowa to meet and thank police officers for their service.

Ebert felt inspired to do so after watching YouTube video of people lining up to hug officers in Dallas.

She said there was no reason she shouldn't do the same thing in Iowa.

Ebert's traveled to Waverly, Denver, Janesville, Waterloo and Cedar Falls, giving free hugs or handshakes to say thanks.

While Ebert was handing out hugs, she also met a young girl who baked cookies for law enforcement. She also saw a family had dropped off cards and treats to Iowa State Patrol.

Ebert says it's important that people continue to show their gratitude.

She hopes to travel even farther later this week.

Officers say thank you not just to Diane Ebert, but also to all that have reached out to them.
