MASON CITY -- Mason City officials have voted to continue an annual doggie dip event in which dogs and their owners play together in the water at the Mason City Aquatic Center.
The Mason City Parks and Recreation Board voted Tuesday to continue the event on a year-to-year basis, and to stop the event if dog hair continues to get in pool filtration tanks.
Mason City superintendent Brian Pauly recommended discontinuing the event last month after an extensive cleaning of the facility's filtration system revealed that dog hair, dog-related residue and human hair in filtration tanks were the cause of cloudy water in the pool earlier this season.
Pauly says if the event continues, $3,000 will be needed annually for a deep-clean of the pool filters.
The event is a fundraiser for the Mason City Dog Park.
