Dike-New Hartford shakes off early deficit to roll past Columbus 11-3

Dike-New Hartford shook off an early 3-0 deficit, scoring 11 unanswered runs to roll past Waterloo Columbus 11-3 in a class 2A district semifinal.

The Wolverines found themselves trailing in the top of the first inning when the Sailors Mason Clasen blasted a 3-run shot over the left field fence. The Sailors would hold a lead up until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Dike-New Hartford's bats came alive in the waning innings. Clayton Maple drove a pitch in to the left-center gap for an RBI double to open the 6th, pulling the Wolverines within a run.  A bunt single by Jake Sonnenberg on a squeeze play tied the game at 3 apiece, while Trent Johnson followed with a 2 RBI single to put the Wolverines ahead for good. In all--Dike-New Hartford scored 6 runs in the 5th to take control.

The Wolverines will host Denver in a district final on Saturday night.

    The Missouri Valley Conference exercised an option to keep the men's basketball tournament in Saint Louis through at least 2020. The previous agreement ended in 2018 with a two year to remain at the Scottrade Center. The tournament, known as Arch Madness, will conduct it's 30th straight tournament in Saint Louis in 2020.
