Woman says parking argument led to drive-by shooting

Posted: Updated:

A home is damaged by gunfire after a shooting which may have been sparked by a shoddy park job.

It happened in the 1100 block of 15th Street SE in Cedar Rapids around dinner time on Thursday night.

A woman who lives in the home says she fears for her families safety.

"This all started over a parking space, literally some stupid nonsense over a parking space," says Mary Jo Kerns.

Kerns says she was with her boyfriend grabbing some food at the Gyro Hut down the street, when the argument started between her boyfriend and a stranger.

She claims she thought it was over when she got home, but to her surprise, it was just beginning.

"He came, turned the corner, popped one shot, and then popped two more shots one hit my house and the other one hit a cup," says Kerns.

She claims they were intentionally tracked down.

"I didn't know they knew where I lived, they literally drove the neighborhood until they found my car and found us. Now they know where I live, I ain't got nowhere to go and hide, my kids don't have nowhere to hide," Kerns said.

It could have been worse.

"It could have been easily any one of us that was standing out here on the porch, could have been shot and laying here dead right now," Kerns says.

Her seven-year-old son was outside playing at the time.

"Now I'm terrified that I may be sitting on my porch in the daytime or at nighttime, they could drive by and see my boyfriend and say well we didn't get him the first time let's get him this time,"  Kerns told us.

Police say the incident remains under investigation, they found multiple shell casings on scene.

So far, no arrest have been made, but police have interviewed some potential suspects.
