Three dead after car drives wrong way on interstate

Three people are dead after a wrong way crash on I-380.

It happened in the northbound lane near the Swisher exit in Johnson County.

The Iowa State Patrol says both cars were in bad shape and everyone inside of the two vehicles died at the scene.

The tragedy taking place just before 4 a.m. in the hours following the 4th of July holiday.

I-380 was shut down for several hours while officers worked to clean up the crash.

"It's tragic no matter how life is lost so yeah you do your heart goes out to all of the families and to the victims," says Sgt. Darin Snedden with the Iowa State Patrol.

Officers say one person was driving a Cadillac the wrong way when it struck a Toyota Camry, killing the two people inside.

The driver of the Cadillac also died.

Authorities are investigating why the Cadillac was driving the wrong way.

"We will look into distracted driving, impaired driving, drowsy driving and all of that is all a part of the investigation as we go now," says Snedden.

The Iowa State Patrol is hoping to release the names of those killed as quickly as possible, but officers are working to notify the families first.

As a part of the investigation, the Iowa State Patrol has possession of both vehicles involved in the crash.
