UPDATE: Man died of heart attack before crash that injured two passengers

UPDATE:

The Dubuque County Sheriff says the man who died in a crash in rural Dubuque County on July 4 actually died of a heart attack prior to the collision.

The news released after results from the state medical examiner showed that 60-year-old James Ernzen had suffered and died from a heart attack before the car left the road.

The two passengers in his car were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries.

Authorities have identified the man killed in an early morning crash in rural Dubuque County.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office says 60-year-old James Ernzen of Luxemburg was pronounced dead at the scene.

His two passengers, 56-year-old Mary Ernzen also of Luxemburg and 20-year-old Robin Ernzen, were both taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque for treatment of their injuries.  Mary was later airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The accident remains under investigation.

A Dubuque County man is dead and two people are in the hospital following a crash in Dubuque County.

According to the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to Highway 52 near Durango around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. They say the driver was traveling on 52 and went off a curve, eventually hitting a retaining wall.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers had to be taken to the hospital. One is at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque. The other passenger had to be airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The driver was a 60-year-old man from rural Dubuque County. Both passengers were females. We do not know their ages.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office plans to release names this afternoon once family members have been notified.
