As Lake Delhi slowly fills, excitement continues to build

LAKE DELHI (KWWL) -

People from all over Iowa heading to Lake Delhi to celebrate their 4th of July.

No boats yet, but many keeping a very close eye on the progress of the lake, after the last floodgate was closed about a week and a half ago.

It's slow going, but there is still a lot of excitement about what will be very soon.

"It's gonna be big, so it'll be pretty cool. And I think you can fish back there," said Meliah Eiben.

How long it will take to fill depends.  Of course, the more rain, the better.

Meanwhile, Jim Cleary has been patiently waiting for a time when Lake Delhi would once again exist.

He and his wife bought the Pizza Place, a popular local restaurant, four years ago, and are finally starting to see the reality they've wanted for a long time.

"Very fulfilling. We've been asking for this, and it's one of those, watch what you ask for things, cause now we're getting into the crazy season. But we've looked forward to it all along," Cleary said.

More and more people have been coming in, and he says the buzz around the area is at an all-time high.

"Excitement, more than anything. You can tell, people are fired up, ready to go," he said.
