WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -

UPDATE: Today Senator Ernst said she "had a good conversation with Donald Trump." Read her full statement below:

"Iowans are frustrated by the current direction of our country - and we simply cannot afford to continue these failed policies under Hillary Clinton. I had a good conversation with Donald Trump today and we discussed what I am hearing from Iowans as I travel around the state on my 99 county tour, and the best path forward for our country. I will continue to share my insights with Donald about the need to strengthen our economy, keep our nation safe, and ensure America is always a strong, stabilizing force around the globe."

UPDATE:

Tweets from Donald Trump this morning are ramping up speculation that he's considering Iowa Senator Joni Ernst as a running mate.

Trump Tweeted, "I look forward to meeting @joniernst today in New Jersey. She has done a great job as Senator of Iowa!"  Moments later, he followed that with this Tweet, "The only people who are not interested in being the V.P. pick are the people who have not been asked!"

Over the weekend, CNN reported that Ernst is on Trump's list.

A few weeks ago, Ernst said she didn't think she was in the mix because no one from his campaign had reached out.

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is being considered as a possible running mate for Donald Trump, according to CNN.

A few weeks ago, Ernst said she didn't think she was in the mix because no one from his campaign had reached out yet, but now, two sources close to the process have told CNN she's among the group being considered.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Indiana Governor Mike Pence are also being looked at as possible vice presidential picks for Trump.
