(KWWL) -

Lori Heims, 55, was killed over the Fourth of July holiday weekend after fragments from a cannon hit her head.

It happened late Saturday night.

Four people were gathered in a backyard located on the 100 block of Church Street in the town of Greeley.

At some point, a homemade cannon was loaded and fired.

Discharging a cannon or air  gun is not allowed. The Delaware County Sheriff John Leclere tells KWWL News there's an ordinance against it in Greeley.

Leclere says the barrel was made from an old, black powder rifle, which was sawed in half and modified with the intention to fire.

Heims suffered a severe head injury, later dying at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The sheriff's office is waiting on autopsy results to determine whether to press criminal charges.

Officials want to find out specifically what type of object caused the fatal head injury. Depending on the autopsy results the cannon will be analyzed as evidence.

Right now, they're also not sure if a cannon can be considered a firearm.

An Edgewood woman is dead after she's hit in the head by fragments from a homemade cannon.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office says it happened behind a house on the one hundred block of Church Street in Greeley. Some friends were gathered in the backyard on Saturday night.

Some cans and lawns chairs are left behind, possibly from the gathering.

There was also a homemade cannon. It backfired, and stuff blew out from the barrel.

Lori Heims, 55, of Edgewood was hit in the head and injured.

911 was called and she was taken to Regional Medical Center in Manchester. But later, Heims was flown to University of Iowa Hospital for her serious injury.

Unfortunately, Heims did not survive her injuries. She died at the hospital.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office tells KWWL they're investigating.
