Man faces charges in stabbing at Des Moines YMCA shelter

Posted: Updated:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say a man is in critical condition after being stabbed with scissors at a YMCA homeless shelter.

The Des Moines Register ( ) reports that 27-year-old Cory Hogan has been charged with assault causing willful injury in a stabbing at the YMCA Supportive Housing Complex around midnight Wednesday.

Police had been called to the complex earlier in the evening. At that time, Hogan told officers he'd previously been in a fight with a black man over cigarettes and that the two exchanged racial name calling. Hogan said that before officers arrived, the man slapped him, held a pocketknife to his throat and threatened him for using the racial term.

Police found the black man with a serious stab wound later that night.

Hogan was being held on $10,000 bond Thursday.
