ROYALS-CARDINALS

Escobar's second go-ahead hit leads Royals over Cards in 12

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Alcides Escobar hit a go-ahead RBI double just inside the right-field line in the 12th inning and the Kansas City Royals outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Escobar drove in the first run of the game with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth. His fly to shallow right off Seth Maness (0-2) fell just in front of Stephen Piscotty, whose homer leading off the 10th tied it at 2.

Chien-Ming Wang (5-0) worked two scoreless innings for Kansas City, which survived blown saves by Wade Davis and Joakim Soria, stranded 19 runners and used all of its bench players. The Royals are 39-50 in the I-70 interleague series but 14-12 at 11-year-old Busch Stadium.

Whit Merrifield put Kansas City ahead in the 10th when a potential double-play grounder was booted by second baseman Matt Carpenter and Merrifield got an RBI. He also doubled with one out in the 12th.

ROYALS-CAIN

Royals place CF Lorenzo Cain on DL with hamstring injury

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Kansas City Royals have placed center fielder Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

The team made the move Wednesday after an MRI revealed the damage.

Rookie outfielder Brett Eibner was recalled from Triple-A Omaha for his third stint with the team this season. The 27-year-old Eibner was batting .297 in 11 games with five doubles, a home run and seven RBIs with the Royals.

Cain was batting .290 with eight homers and 39 RBIs.

CWS FINALS POSTPONED

Bad weather forces CWS final to be postponed until Thursday

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The College World Series championship game between Coastal Carolina and Arizona has been postponed until Thursday because of inclement weather in the Omaha area Wednesday night.

NCAA officials waited 2 hours, 23 minutes after the scheduled start time to postpone the game. More rain and lightning were forecast for the area in the early morning hours, meaning a delay would have been likely.

The best-of-three series is tied at a game apiece. Coaches Gary Gilmore of Coastal Carolina (54-18) and Jay Johnson of Arizona (49-23) agreed with the decision to play Thursday.

Neither announced whether their pitching plans would change with the extra time off. Coastal Carolina was to start Alex Cunningham (10-4) against Arizona's Bobby Dalbec (11-5). Both pitched on Saturday.

STADIUM HOUSE

Neighbors appeal to nix house resembling Kinnick Stadium

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Neighboring property owners filed an appeal with Iowa City Board of Adjustment in an effort to stop an Iowa City couple's plans to build a home designed to resemble Kinnick Stadium.

The Press-Citizen reports that the appeal was filed Wednesday by the Neighbors of Manville Heights Association and property owners in the area.

Reed and Sandy Carlson have filed building plans for a nearly 7,500-square-foot house that would echo the stadium architecture.

City officials recently issued a building permit, determining that, despite the size and appearance of the proposed building, the Carlsons' intention to use the house as a single-family home is allowed.

The Board of Adjustment is scheduled to discuss the appeal on August 10th.

BLUES-BRODZIAK

Blues sign Kyle Brodziak to 2-year contract extension

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Blues have signed forward Kyle Brodziak to a two-year contract extension.

The 32-year-old Brodziak had two goals in the playoffs after totaling 11 points in 76 regular-season games leading the checking line.

The 11-year veteran also has played for Edmonton and Minnesota and has 239 points in 697 career games. He was a seventh-round draft pick by the Oilers in 2003.

The Blues also announced Wednesday that the Chicago Wolves, their American Hockey League affiliate, have named Craig Berube head coach. The 50-year-old Berube, former head coach at Philadelphia from 2013-15, got a two-year contract.

Berube played 17 seasons with the Flyers, Maple Leafs, Flames, Capitals and Islanders.
