IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Researchers and transportation experts say there is a safety issue on the roadways and it's drowsy driving.

The University of Iowa College of Public Health hosted a Drowsy Driving Summit today.

"We talk about impaired driving, drunk, drugged, distracted and now the fourth D drowsy. Not everybody's drinking, not everybody's on drugs, not everybody's distracted, everybody needs their sleep and has to be wide awake and alert when they drive," says Dr. Mark Rosekind with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Experts say prevention is key and they encourage getting at least eight hours of sleep per night.
