Wize Girlz Camp empowers young girls

Girls from the Cedar Valley are hard at work creating their own clothing designs. But at this special fashion camp the girls are learning about much more than clothes.

"For these girls using computer aided design it's complicated, it's hard, when they see these prints coming off the printer they feel empowered, because I designed that, I made that and they see it come right off the printer," said Annette Lynch, Director of the School of Applied Human Science at UNI.

Girls at the Wize Girlz Camp say they were shocked about the technology they learned about.

"I didn't know that I thought you just like made it, not like technology, like you didn't print it like that," said Mariauna Staley, camper.

Technology is a huge aspect of this camp, but so is empowering these girls.

"It's about empowerment and they are really taking a hold of this today, it's great," said Karen Swanson, Target Director of Product Development.

"Rather than fashion being something that makes you into something. This allows the girls to make fashion what they think they wanna wear, their friends want to wear, which I think is really an important message," said Lynch.

Another important message, respecting yourself and your body.

"Teenagers that do look in magazines and if they see if all the adults are dressed this way they will why can't I dress this way, ya know?" said Aariona Ezell, camper.

Mainly, girls will leave the camp knowing there are many job waiting for them.

"I think it means a lot to them because, I know they get paid, but some people don't do it because they get paid, they do it because they can, because they are good at it," said Mariauna.

The Boys and Girls Club and the YWCA helped put on the camp for the girls. The camp runs through Thursday on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
