Only three council members show up at city council meeting

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo council members held a work session today, but only three members attended. Today they wanted to discuss the budget, but the bigger question where were the other members?

Three council members were not at Sunday's meeting

"Last week at the council meeting we did give an actual formal invitation to the mayor, to the other three council members and to the two department heads that we talked to about today, but for whatever reason you'd have to ask them why they didn't come," said At-Large City Council Member, Steve Schmitt.

Council member Tom Lind, Bruce Jacobs and Steve Schmitt did attend and spoke about the town's budget. The purpose of this meeting is to educate the people of Waterloo

"Again the purpose here is not to be conducting business, the purpose here is to really have an open forum to get citizens questions and citizens input and suggestions," said Schmitt.

People did ask questions and give their input. One question not asked-where were the other council members?

"We had that conversation earlier this year and some of the council members basically just said that, they are just there to support the mayor, support the department head, or whatever they want to do. I don't think that's our position and I don't think that's councilman Lind or Jacobs' position either. I think we believe we are there to represent the citizens and we are there to ask questions to do everything we can do to help the city of Waterloo run efficiently and to allows us to be more competitive with our neighbors," said Schmitt.

He also says he looks forward to filling the seventh council seat to help with divided voting.
