Cedar Falls firefighter running a 5K in full gear for Cystic Fibrosis

Posted: Updated:

It's not exactly easy running with a firefighter's air tank and 50 plus pounds of gear on, but Cedar Falls firefighter Shane Farmer is doing it with passion. He's raising money for Iowans with Cystic Fibrosis. He is using his air tank to mimic how difficult it is for people with the disease to breathe.

Farmer says, "If I'm in discomfort for 30 minutes,  it's not a big deal compared to what people with this disease deal with everyday."

He's getting ready to run the Sturgis Falls 5K this weekend. His inspiration? Berne and Maren Denison, twins from Cedar Falls with Cystic Fibrosis.

Maren says, "It creates sticky mucus in your lungs that's really hard to get out...you have to take a lot of meds."

This will be Shane's 9th year in a row running for the twins, their father is still amazed.

Chris Denison says, "To have somebody that's willing to do something that's really not an easy thing to do because he's just interested in the plight of our kids and other patients with Cystic Fibrosis, it's humbling."

It won't be easy, but Shane says it's worth it.

Shane says, "Knowing that every dollar we raise is going to help them live longer is what it's all about."

All of the money Shane raises will stay local to help Iowans with Cystic Fibrosis. He has raised more than  $17,000 in the last 9 years and he doesn't plan on stopping...
