Sweet Corn harvest expected for mid July

Posted: Updated:

Recent rain helps growers, and most farmers are preparing to harvest their sweet corn in a few weeks.

Heartland Farms owner David Myers said he can't wait to bite in to the first piece.

"It's so sweet, we were teaching people last year to eat it raw. You just peel it and eat it, and it's pretty dang good," Myers said.

Right now, Heartland Farms is focusing on strawberries.

"We're still in strawberry season. So, that's been the focus. Everybody knows by mid-summer and after the Fourth, that sweet corn, tomatoes, and watermelons,  that's when summer tastes the best," Myers said.

Growers out here at Heartland Farms say it's still too soon to harvest, but with the tassles sprouting up top, they expect sweet corn to be ready in the next few weeks.

"It's good. Everybody knows that hamburgers, onions, fresh corn, and even some melons ... I grew up here, and everybody knows that marks summer," Myers said.

Myers said the best year for sweet corn was 2012 when the weather was warmer earlier in the year.

Myers said he knows a few growers in Muscatine who will have sweet corn ready by the Fourth of July.
