CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

We are hearing from friends of a murder victim for the first time after her alleged killer is caught.

62-year-old Robyn Furmanski was found inside a fiery Cedar Rapids condo in March.

Police say 43-year-old Onyale Hughes is facing charges of robbery, arson and First Degree Murder.

Friends say Robyn was a great person and they can't believe anyone could do this.

"I'm real glad they caught him," Mary Osterkamp says, a friend.

"I was upset, I didn't know who would do something like that, I figured she got murdered, somebody had to have done it," Osterkamp told us.

Hughes was found with Robyn's prescription medications and her blood on his clothes.

Investigators say Robyn was murdered, she has head injuries, smoke inhalation, burns and her condo was intentionally set on fire.

The Osterkamp family has fond memories and a bird, given to them by Robyn, which they remember her by.

"She would come over her, sit and talk to us for a long time, and see my son," says Osterkamp.

Robyn worked for the Cedar Rapids school district for many years and had a special bond in the family.

"She had more of a special relationship with my son because he's got autism and he's ADHD and ODD and a lot of them don't understand it and she did," Osterkamp told us.

Hughes has an extensive criminal background, he is currently at the Tama County Jail on unrelated charges.

Police expect him to be transported to Cedar Rapids next week for his initial court appearance in this case.
