Transgender woman claims Iowa nursing home abused her

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

An Iowa transgender woman claims she feared for her life while under the care of an Iowa nursing home.

"They called me fag, they told me to shut up and grabbed me by my throat," said Lequan Edwards.

Edwards alleges the incident happened earlier this year at Chariton Specialty Care while she was recovering from partial paralysis after two strokes.

She also claims a nurse threw her in a scalding hot shower and severely burned her legs, leaving her unable to walk.

Chariton Specialty Care responded to Lequan’s allegations saying "Due to patient privacy laws we are bound to protect information about our residents. With that said, there has not been any finding that abuse and or discriminations has occurred at Chariton Specialty Care."

For the past four months Lequan has been receiving care at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
