Man with Iowa ties, freed from Congo prison

Posted: Updated:

A man with Iowa ties, imprisoned in the Congo, is now free.

In February, Kiboko Kiboko told KWWL his brother Vano was being held in a Congolese prison for speaking out against the nation's president.

Kiboko said Vano was a political prisoner and he feared for his brother's life.

We are learning that Vano Kiboko was freed on May 5th and has come to Iowa to be with family.

Vano spoke to us today with his brother Kiboko translating.

"Finally God really intervened this was a miracle," Vano said.

Despite potential danger in Congo, Vano told us he plans to go back within a week, he says he feels compelled to stand up for what is right.

While Vano is here he will be speaking at the First United Methodist church in Marion, the event is on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
