DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

UPDATE: Dubuque Police confirm a man involved in a two hour, tense standoff with law enforcement has been taken into custody without incident.

"We were able to talk him out of the weapon, and gain custody without incident, without any injury," said. Lt. Scott Baxter with the Dubuque Police.

Police originally got a call around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday of a man who might harm himself.

A Dubuque County Sheriff's Deputy found the man, and followed him to Sky Blue Drive near Roosevelt Street.  That's where they saw he was armed with a long rifle, police said.

Police responded quickly and with plenty of force.  Multiple officers seen with rifles of their own, while tactical teams moved into place as well.

After about two hours, they were able to take the man into custody.

"It's very, very tense, very stressful. Especially this time of year, when you have a lot of people outside, we have an obligation to protect them. Try to get this individual contained, try and prevent him from hurting himself. So it's one of the more stressful calls law enforcement officers can be involved in," Baxter said.

Kim Schmit, who lives nearby, also feeling tense throughout the afternoon.

"It's a pretty quiet neighborhood, very family orientated neighborhood, so again, it's out of the ordinary that something like this would happen," she said.

The man was immediately taken to Mercy Medical Center for evaluation. His name and potential charges have not been released.
