The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy of Jayden Choate, and results confirm the boy died from a gunshot wound to his head.

The Turkey Valley School District also announced it will have counselors on hand to assist any students who may have known Choate -- who was a pre-school student in the district.

The funeral for a young boy accidentally shot and killed in Elgin is scheduled.

Family and friends of 4-year-old Jayden Jawan Choate will meet for a private graveside ceremony.

A tight-knit community in northeast Iowa has come together to honor the life of a young child who police say accidentally shot himself.

4-year-old Jayden Choate died Friday after he was rushed to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. Police believe he accidentally shot himself around 2:30 p.m.

Residents gathered in a community park for a candlelight vigil in his memory Sunday, according to the Des Moines Register. Volunteers set up luminaries in white bags with phrases such as "Mommy's Angel," ''Little Man," ''Big Brother," and "Until we meet again."

Colletta Harnisch, who helped organize the event as a friend of the family, says that money collected at the vigil will go toward funeral expenses and whatever else the family needs.

Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher confirms that a 4-year-old boy died after an accidental shooting in Elgin Friday afternoon.

Sheriff Fisher says he believes the boy accidentally shot himself in the head.

The Fayette County Sheriff says this is a very active investigation.

According to initial reports, the boy's mom and two children were visiting a friend at the Elgin home.

The sheriff says the 4-year-old, as well as a younger child, were left inside while the mom and a friend stepped outside. That is when the gun was fired.

The child was taken to the West Union hospital where he died.

The Fayette County Sheriff confirms the gun is legally owned by the homeowner.

KWWL spoke to a very shaken witness who said the mother ran to a near by business screaming for help.

The witness also told us, the homeowner was not at home at the time of the incident.

A 4-year-old accidentally shot himself and has a wound to the head.

The child and his family were visiting a friend at 210 Main Street in Elgin at the time of the shooting.

The child is at the hospital in West Union. His status is unknown.

As of now, we are unsure if the child and his family are from Elgin or not.
