Rescue crews continue search for man missing in Iowa river

WEBSTER COUNTY (KWWL) -

Webster County rescue crews will begin searching again this morning for a man missing in the Des Moines River.

Officials say the 23 year old from Dayton was last seen by a fisherman near a bridge by the Riverside Tavern in Lehigh -- just before 6:00 Sunday morning.

Witnesses say they saw the man struggling to keep his head above water and called for help.

More than a dozen agencies spent the day searching the river banks as well as using aircraft and sonar, but they called it off for the evening last night.

Rescue crews say the water under the bridge is full of debris -- and that's one of the reasons they are having trouble finding the man.

"Currently the river is very high and moving very quickly," said Rod Strait, Webster County Chief Deputy. "I think the last information I have is four knots on the river so the dive team can't dive down after 3 knots."

Crews will begin the search Monday morning at 9:00 a.m.
